    Novak Djokovic has opened up about his rise to world No. 1 and the resistance he confronted whereas breaking into an period dominated by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

    “They wished me to play to their tune, to suit into their script,” he stated. “It damage me a lot that I even modified my behaviour, hoping they’d settle for me.”

    Djokovic added that over time he realised acceptance was not one thing he might management.

    “In the long run, I understood that I wanted to remain true to myself and settle for that some folks won’t ever like me. That’s superb. I’m who I’m.”

    Reflecting on his first spell as world No. 1, Djokovic stated the dynamic with Federer and Nadal shifted, although his respect for them remained.

    “I regarded as much as them then and I nonetheless do for paving the street,” he stated. “However as soon as I felt the gap, I stated, ‘High quality. No drawback.’”

    Djokovic made these remarks in a sit-down interview with Slaven Bilic on the Failures of Champions podcast.
