India adds record 52.5 GW power capacity in 10 months, led by renewables | Chennai News – The Times of India

Chennai: India has added a record 52,537 MW of power generation capacity, including all segments, during the 10-month period of this fiscal, marking the highest-ever addition in a single year.The new capacity addition marks an increase of more than 11% in the nation’s total installed power capacity during this period. The latest addition surpasses the previous record of 34,054 MW achieved in FY2024–25, according to an official statement.Renewable energy accounted for the bulk of the new capacity, contributing 39,657 MW, or roughly 75% of the total addition. Solar power led the expansion with 34,955 MW, followed by wind power at 4,613 MW, reflecting the country’s continued push towards clean energy.With these additions, the country’s total installed power generation capacity reached 520,510.95 MW as of January 31, 2026. This includes 248,541.62 MW from fossil fuel-based sources and 271,969.33 MW from non-fossil fuel sources.Within the non-fossil fuel segment, renewable energy accounted for 263,189.33 MW, while nuclear power contributed 8,780 MW.In the renewable energy sector, Gujarat leads with an installed capacity of 43,998 MW, followed by Rajasthan at 43,798 MW, Maharashtra at 31,382 MW, Tamil Nadu at 27,189 MW and Karnataka at 26,138.62 MW. While Gujarat leads in the wind energy segment, Rajasthan remains on top in solar power.
