35% Students Using GenAI in EdTech, But Many Confuse It With Search Engine: Bharat Survey 2025

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is increasingly finding its way into the education curriculum of children in the country, but misconceptions about the technology are also coming to light. According to the Bharat Survey for EdTech 2025, released on Wednesday, 35% of children using edtech are now studying with GenAI tools. However, among those who are aware of GenAI, nearly three-quarters consider it merely an internet search engine.

The survey was conducted between July 2025 and January 2026. It covered 12,500 households and 2,500 teachers across 10 states. According to the report, GenAI is no longer an experimental technology for children in low-income families. Of these, 96% use it several times a week, while 69% of these children use GenAI tools daily.

According to the report, it was found that 85% of the Gen AI-savvy children said they understood how it worked, but 72% compared it to a regular search application. This confuses the line between the possible answers generated by AI and the correct information available on the internet.

Furthermore, approximately 46% of respondents cited misinformation as a major risk associated with the use of edtech and GenAI. Furthermore, concerns were expressed about excessive use.

According to the survey, children are using GenAI primarily for school-related purposes, with 73% using it for doubt-solving and practice, 48% for learning new skills or language translation, while 32% are using it for test preparation.

Children like GenAI because 45% like its easy-to-understand explanations, 41% find it time-saving and valuable when it comes to getting instant answers, while 40% like its interactive format.
