Newcastle-headquartered hedgehog lab has become a certified B Corporation. The news follows the global digital product consultancy’s decision to dedicate a percentage of its revenue to social impact initiatives through a new Social Value Fund.
Founded in 2007, hedgehog lab is a Newcastle-based technology consultancy, with additional offices in Leeds, York and Bulgaria. With 120 people across its offices, the firm helps clients to strategise and execute digital strategies, as well as conduct user research and interface design.
As the firm continues to grow, it has become the latest cohort of the growing B Corp movement. Joining a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, hedgehog lab finds itself alongside more than 10,000 certified as B Corps globally.
Chris Turner, CEO of B Lab UK, said, “We are delighted to welcome hedgehog lab to the B Corp community. This is a movement of companies that are committed to changing how business operates and believe business really can be a force for good. We know that hedgehog lab is going to be a fantastic addition to the community and will continue driving the conversation forward.”
The B Corp community in the UK is the largest and fastest-growing in the world, with more than 2,600 companies spanning a range of different industries and sizes, including Innocent Drinks, Patagonia, Finisterre, Elemis, and Sipsmith Gin.
Alongside the certification, hedgehog lab has launched an enhanced social value framework that turns its purpose into measurable action, committing the company to giving back to communities through time, skills, and funding. Included in the framework is the creation of a Social Value Fund, which commits a percentage of revenue from client contracts towards impact projects. The fund will support volunteering activity, enable pro-bono or discounted work, back team-led community initiatives, and strengthen collaboration with impact-focused clients.
To help embed these commitments into day-to-day culture, hedgehog lab is introducing five paid ‘impact days’ per employee each year. These days can be used for volunteering with partner organisations or learning and development that supports social value, equity, inclusion, and sustainability.
