Johnson & Johnson announced Wednesday it will invest more than $1 billion to build a next-generation cell therapy manufacturing facility in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, a project expected to support more than 4,000 construction jobs.

The new plant will produce advanced cell therapy technologies used to treat cancer, immune-related illnesses, and neurological diseases.

Once fully operational, the site will also create more than 500 skilled biomanufacturing jobs, expanding the company’s US manufacturing capacity, PharmTech reported.

The investment is part of Johnson & Johnson’s broader $55 billion commitment to boost manufacturing, research, development, and technology across the United States through early 2029.

“For 140 years, Johnson & Johnson has been a leading innovator in American healthcare, and we are honored to continue advancing that legacy in Pennsylvania,” said CEO Joaquin Duato. He added that by combining scientific excellence with modern manufacturing and working with local communities, the company is creating “significant opportunities for workers and families.”

The facility will be located in Montgomery County, just outside Philadelphia. Company officials said it will use cutting-edge manufacturing processes designed to help speed up the production of life-changing medicines.

Johnson & Johnson already has a strong footprint in the Keystone State. The company operates 10 facilities across Pennsylvania, covering more than 2 million square feet.

Its operations in the state include manufacturing, research, distribution, and office space. According to FoxBusiness, the company estimates its economic impact in Pennsylvania at about $10 billion each year.

Pennsylvania leaders welcomed the announcement. Governor Josh Shapiro called the state a “powerhouse for innovation and manufacturing in the life sciences.”

He said the investment shows that companies recognize Pennsylvania’s workforce, strategy, and ability to move projects forward quickly.

US Senator Dave McCormick said the project highlights the state’s leadership in life sciences and advanced manufacturing.

“This $1 billion-plus investment… will produce life-changing treatments for patients, along with new and good jobs for our Commonwealth,” he said.

Senator John Fetterman also praised the move, saying the investment will bring new jobs, advanced manufacturing, and life-saving medicine to local communities.
