The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opposed the Telangana government’s proposal to divide the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate civic bodies, calling the move “unscientific, impractical and politically motivated.”

In a press release, S. Malla Reddy, Medchal Urban district president, and others alleged that the Congress government’s decision was aimed at gaining electoral advantage rather than improving urban governance. They said Hyderabad, a historic and integrated metropolis, was being fragmented without any administrative rationale, which would lead to confusion and inconvenience for citizens.

Mr Malla Reddy argued that if decentralisation was genuinely intended, the government should have logically reorganised civic limits based on geography and administrative feasibility. Instead, districts such as Serilingampally and Medchal were being arbitrarily split, while several urban, semi-urban and rural areas were being merged in an unplanned manner. This would severely impact service delivery and accountability.

Raising concerns over governance, the BJP leaders pointed out that key departments such as revenue, health, education, transport and registration would continue to function along existing district boundaries, forcing citizens to approach multiple offices for basic services. It added that agencies like HMDA and HMWSSB would remain unchanged, defeating the purpose of creating new corporations.

They also questioned the government on the timing of the decision, noting that GHMC, which currently has nearly 300 divisions, was first expanded extensively and was now being abruptly divided without clear justification. The BJP also expressed concern over the reservation of mayoral posts, asking how reservations would be implemented after the proposed division into three corporations.

They said residents of Medchal, Uppal, Kukatpally, Rajendranagar, Maheshwaram and surrounding constituencies would be most affected, and it would continue to oppose the decision through democratic and legal means.
