Imphal, Feb 24: Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 houses for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G).
The approval for the financial year 2025–26 was granted following a meeting between Chouhan and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in New Delhi. The two Deputy Chief Ministers, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, also accompanied the Chief Minister during the meeting.
The houses are intended for families displaced due to the ongoing ethnic violence and law and order crisis in the state.
According to officials, the Manipur government had earlier submitted a proposal seeking a special project under PMAY-G for the construction of 5,000 houses for affected families.
The Union Ministry of Rural Development has also approved a special window under the Awaas+ 2024 household survey to capture details of eligible affected households. The state government has been permitted to continue the registration process for eligible beneficiaries under the special project.
However, the ministry has directed the state government to ensure that beneficiaries are identified strictly in accordance with PMAY-G guidelines. The identification and uploading of eligible beneficiaries must be completed through the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application.
The houses will be constructed in line with the Framework for Implementation (FFI) provisions of PMAY-G.
Additionally, the state government has been allowed to sanction houses under the special project for beneficiaries who had earlier received one or more instalments under PMAY-G but whose homes were destroyed during the ethnic violence.
During the meeting, Chouhan assured the state government of full support in its efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
