• Decode the Mystery Word: Use this rule: Each letter is replaced by the letter that comes before it in the alphabet. If the coded word is DBU, what is the real word? Explain how you cracked the code.
• Find the Hidden Rule: Look at the words tap, nap, sun, and bun. What letter change is happening each time? Use the same rule to change the word DOG.
  • Bog (first letter is changed to something that comes before D)
• Find the Connection: Three of these words belong together: whisper, shout, talk, truck. Which word does not belong, and what is the rule that connects the other three?
• Build a Logical Riddle: One object fits all three clues: It has a spine, it holds ideas, and it can be opened but not eaten. Have kids explain how each clue points to the answer.
• Follow the Sound Pattern: Say these words out loud: bat, bet, bit. What vowel sound changes each time? Write the next word in the pattern and explain why it fits.
• Solve the Riddle: I help you dry off, but I get wetter the more I work. What am I?

• Decode the equation: If a triangle equals 5 and a square equals 3, what could a triangle + square + triangle equal? Can you find more than one solution and explain your reasoning?
