The Women in Cinema Collective is hosting solidarity programs titled “Avalkoppam” in three Kerala cities on February 17, marking nine years since the 2017 actress assault. These events express continued support for the survivor, celebrating her courage and the #Avalkoppam movement’s impact on victims and social transformation. The gatherings aim to unite those standing with her and all survivors.

TRIGGER WARNING: This article includes references to sexual abuse. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has announced that it will host a solidarity program titled “Avalkoppam” across three major Kerala cities. The event is being held to express continued support for the survivor in the 2017 actress assault case. The gatherings will take place on February 17 which marks nine years since the attack. The events are scheduled for 6 pm at Manaveeyam Veedhi in Thiruvananthapuram, Abdul Kalam Marg at Marine Drive in Ernakulam, and the Mananchira Open Stage in Kozhikode. The attack occurred on February 17, 2017.

    WCC’s social media post

WCC wrote on social media, “February 17, 2017, left the sharpest scar. Yet, it was the same day she courageously spoke up against her violators. That one step inspired us to stand with her in the fight for justice, giving birth to the #Avalkoppam movement. Over the past 9 years, the movement has imparted courage to victims, transforming them to survivors. In small but significant ways, it has aided the social transformation happening in Kerala. Thanking everyone for the support and solidarity, WCC invites everyone who stands with her and all the survivors to gather and hold a candle to commemorate this journey. Together, let us shine light in the dark corners.”

    Emotional reactions on social media

The announcement received emotional reactions online. One user commented, “She got this love.. Even before this day approaching, I am having different kind of palpitations and anxiety .. just being an outsider, itself the pain I felt is deep .. she is surely going to win this battle .. she has lots of people around her, holding her tight through this Lots of love and prayers always.”

Survivor’s strong statement after recent verdict

The upcoming events also gain relevance due to the survivor’s earlier reaction to the trial court verdict in the Kerala actor assault case. After the verdict was announced, she shared a deeply personal and strongly worded statement. In her post, she wrote, “Not every citizen in this country is treated equally before the law,” describing it as her painful realisation after years of suffering. Survivor referred to the emotional struggles, the tears, and the long fight that shaped her perspective.WCC’s ‘Avalkoppam’ aims to bring people together across Kerala. It also celebrates the strength of those who spoke up and those who continue to stand by them.DISCLAIMER: If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, assault, or abuse, please seek immediate help.
