We currently know next to nothing about God of War Trilogy Remake. It’s in development and it’s seemingly years away from release — and that’s pretty much it.

But while people can’t stop banging on about the potential return of sex minigames, we’re sitting here with a much more important question on our minds: just how much of a remake is this thing going to be?

And by that, we mean… is Trilogy Remake going to simply recreate the first three God of War games with lovely new assets and visuals — or is it going to reinvent them for a modern audience that’s far more familiar with God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok?

The answer to this question obviously all depends on the project’s scope. A full-on re-imagining would take a lot longer to develop than a graphical overhaul, and we are talking about a package that includes not one, not two, but three games here.

There are basically two types of remakes in gaming. The first is the kind that the masters over at Bluepoint create, like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The gameplay, the systems, the mechanics — all of that stuff stays the same, but they become encased within state-of-the-art visuals.

The second style of remake tends to be a lot more ambitious; these ones usually take older titles and remake them in the proper sense of the word. We almost hesitate to say it, but Final Fantasy 7 Remake falls into this category; a totally modernised, re-imagined take on a classic.

A less contentious example would be Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter — a ground-up remake that takes an old isometric RPG and transforms it into a fully 3D adventure that borrows gameplay systems and mechanics from current games in the same series.

So, back to God of War, what would the first three games look like if they were recreated in the style of Kratos’ more recent adventures? Is that just utterly unrealistic? Or could it actually happen? What if Santa Monica Studio’s intention is to have the original trilogy fall in line with Ragnarok in order to make one completely cohesive series?

For what it’s worth, we do think it’s rather unrealistic to expect that level of work across three whole titles — three titles that are widely considered stone-cold classics, we should add.

Because at that point, you’re basically making three new games. Outside of Kratos’ Blades of Chaos moveset, what else is pretty much ready to go?

The level design, for instance, would need to be totally redone to accommodate a free over-the-shoulder camera. And on top of that, enemies would need to be completely recreated to work with the new combat system. This is starting to sound a bit ridiculous…

But assuming it is possible, would you want Trilogy Remake to attempt such a thing? That’s what we’re here to find out. Vote in our polls, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.
