South Africa’s sports activities minister Gayton McKenzie says “no formal choice has been taken to relocate” the 2026 Ladies’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) away from Morocco after his deputy introduced that South Africa would step in and stage the finals.
McKenzie issued a clarifying assertion after Peace Mabe declared the nation “shall be internet hosting” the event, which is scheduled to kick off on 17 March.
“When Morocco mentioned ‘We’re not in a position to host’, South Africa, we mentioned ‘Sure, we can be found’. We’re going to take it,” Mabe later advised SABC Sport after her announcement at an awards ceremony on Sunday.
However later within the night McKenzie mentioned that Morocco “stays the formally designated host” of Wafcon 2026.
“[The remarks made] don’t represent a proper affirmation or assumption of internet hosting obligations,” he added.
“The Confederation of African Soccer (Caf) has not but triggered any different internet hosting course of.
“South Africa has expressed its willingness to help Caf if required, ought to different internet hosting preparations for the 2026 Wafcon turn into essential.
