Karnataka could get its first set of women firefighters. In a significant move aimed at promoting gender neutrality and inclusivity, the State government for the first time has proposed key changes in the designation of posts within the Fire and Emergency Services Department and changed the term “Fireman” to a gender-neutral title “Firefighter” in all official records and future recruitment notifications.

The decision follows directions issued during a meeting of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to encourage greater participation of women in fire services across the country. Acting on these recommendations, the State has initiated steps to implement the changes and process is on.

Under the new policy, women will be provided 10% reservation in direct recruitment to the posts of firefighter and station officer in the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department in different categories.

Additionally, the designation “Leading Fireman” will be renamed as “Leading Firefighter” to ensure uniformity and gender neutrality across ranks.

The changes will be implemented in accordance with the provisions of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Rules, 2013. All future recruitment notifications will reflect the revised nomenclature. The modalities of the recruitment and training process will be chalked out soon, as it is still under process, a senior officer said.

Established in 1964, the department plays a crucial role in responding to fire accidents, natural disasters, floods, animal rescues, and enforcing fire safety norms in buildings across the State.

According to official data, the department has a sanctioned strength of 7,159 posts, of which around 5,200 officers and personnel are currently in service.

Officials expressed hope that the move would enhance gender equality within the force and encourage greater participation of women in emergency response services.
