Guwahati, Feb 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah will formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 22.
Sarma made the announcement at a press conference held at Borah’s residence in the Ghoramara area of Guwahati following a closed-door meeting with him.
“His joining will strengthen the party, particularly because he is a grassroots leader. He will formally join the BJP in the presence of Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia,” Sarma said.
The development comes just a day after Borah tendered his resignation from the Indian National Congress on February 16.
Before his exit, Borah had categorically rejected the idea of associating with any weakened or compromised faction of the APCC, asserting that he would remain loyal only to the original Congress.
He had stated that he would consider returning to the party if senior leaders — MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia — issued a united call reaffirming the party’s integrity.
Sarma’s visit to Borah’s residence drew attention after Borah’s family members welcomed the chief minister with a traditional ‘aarti’, a gesture widely seen as politically symbolic.
Although the Congress high command did not immediately accept Borah’s resignation and reportedly attempted to persuade him to reconsider, the latest announcement signals a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape.
