Tura, Feb 23: The Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, will visit Tura from February 28 to March 1 in what Church authorities describe as the first visit by a Vatican Ambassador to the Garo Hills.
The visit marks the highest level of official Vatican representation to the region. It will also be only the secondy major Vatican visit to Meghalaya, after Pope John Paul II visited Shillong in 1984.
According to the Diocese, the Nuncio will arrive at Guwahati on Saturday morning and travel to Tura via Mendal. He is scheduled to reach the Bishop’s House at 3:30 PM.
A concelebrated Mass will be held at the Cathedral on Saturday evening, with clergy from across the region expected to attend.
The Nuncio will also visit the tombs of former Bishops and attend a reception at Sacred Heart Church, Chandmari, followed by a programme at the Sacred Heart Shrine.
On Sunday, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Shrine Gate. Church authorities have announced that services in other parishes within Tura will be cancelled to enable priests and parishioners to attend the Mass. Regular services in parishes outside Tura will continue.
Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal has called upon the faithful to participate in the Sunday service. A large turnout is expected.
Church officials said the visit reflects the Vatican’s engagement with the Catholic community in Northeast India.
