Stray dogs have free run of premier stadium in Ludhiana.

Ludhiana: Athletes at Punjab’s flagship Guru Nanak Stadium are raising the alarm over a surging stray dog population that officials warn is threatening the safety of competitors and the integrity of high-level sporting events. The stadium, famed for its professional basketball courts and athletics tracks, has seen a spike in canine presence across practice grounds, entry gates, and spectator pavilions, sparking calls for an emergency intervention by municipal authorities.

A Growing Safety RiskThe infestation has become particularly disruptive during peak morning and evening training hours. Sports coaches and athletes report that dogs frequently wander onto the athletics tracks while runners are at full sprint, creating a high-risk environment for both humans and animals. “The stadium is not the right place for stray dogs,” said District Sports Officer (DSO) Kuldeep Chugh. “It is dangerous for both the athletes and the dogs if an encounter occurs during a high-speed practice session on the track.“Impact on CompetitionDespite its status as a preferred venue for district, state, and national tournaments, the stadium’s “dog problem” has now extended into official event windows. Dogs have been observed roaming the athletics lanes during active heats. Animals have taken up residence in the seating areas reserved for spectators and visiting dignitaries. While some dogs appear docile, coaches noted that others exhibit aggressive behavior, making it impossible to guarantee athlete safety.Call for Municipal ActionThe sports department has announced plans to formally petition the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana (MCL) Commissioner to relocate the animals. Athletes and staff are advocating for a humane solution, requesting that NGOs and animal welfare groups assist in moving the dogs to shelters where they can receive proper nutrition and medical care. “We will write to the Commissioner and concerned authorities to take necessary action as soon as possible,” Chugh added. “The goal is to shift the dogs to a safer environment so the stadium can be used solely by the athletes.”
