Denmark lost its netminder as it went for an upset over Team USA on Saturday.
Mads Sogaard left the game with 8:53 remaining in the third period after stretching to make a save on American forward Brady Tkachuk.
Sogaard grimaced after the play and went to the Denmark bench at the next stoppage. He was visibly frustrated by being forced to leave, slamming his helmet on the ground while talking with team training staff.
He was replaced by backup Frederik Dichow, as the Danes had been saving regular starter Frederik Andersen for Sunday’s game against Latvia.
Denmark went on to lose 6-3.
Sogaard, 25, was playing in his first game of these Olympics.
The Ottawa Senators goalie has played just two NHL games this season, posting an .833 save percentage and 4.65 goals-against average (GAA). Most of his time has come in the AHL, where he owns a 4-8-4 record with a 3.30 GAA and .889 save percentage.
Sogaard has played with the Senators in each of the past five seasons, but has never appeared in more than 19 games.
