Tony Clark is expected to announce his resignation as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to Evan Drellich, Ken Rosenthal and Andy McCullough of The Athletic in a report on Tuesday.
The MLB and NFL Players Associations were the subjects of a federal investigation for their role in OneTeam Partners, a licensing company co-owned by the sports unions. The investigation accusses the executives on using licensing money or equity to enrich themselves.
Clark has been the head of the MLBPA since 2013.
The 53-year-old’s expected resignation comes before a highly anticipated negotiation between MLB and the MLBPA on a new CBA, with the current agreement expiring on Dec. 1.
MLB has not missed games due to a labour dispute since the 1994 strike.
A big talking point heading into the negotiations is whether MLB will adopt a salary cap, as the NFL, NBA and NHL use, in a way to control spending with teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets exceeding the tax threshold.
