Prodigious Australian striker Mohamed Touré suffered an upper-leg injury playing with Norwich City in the Championship on Thursday (AEDT) in a potentially major blow to the Socceroos three months out from the FIFA World Cup.

Touré went down clutching at his groin as he chased a long ball from teammate Jack Stacey early in Norwich City’s match against Sheffield at Carrow Road.

Norwich City manager Philippe Clement consoled the 21-year-old as he limped off the pitch.

Prior to the clash with Sheffield, Touré had scored five goals in four games since crossing from Danish Superliga club Randers on a four-and-a-half-year deal reportedly worth $5.12 million.

The World Cup, to be hosted by Canada, Mexico and the US, will run from June 12 until July 20 (AEDT).

Australia will kick off its campaign on day three of the World Cup in Vancouver against a country to be determined.

In late March, the Socceroos will play a friendly against Cameroon in Sydney and a friendly against Curaçao in Melbourne.

Touré and fellow young gun Nestory Irankunda could form a lethal partnership up front for the Socceroos.

Touré has scored two goals from five appearances for Australia.

In Randers colours, Touré scored 12 goals in 48 appearances.

Football’s new home, Stan Sport, is the only place to watch the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, WSL, European World Cup qualifiers, J.League, NSWL and K League

Randers manager Jesper Sorensen admitted recently the club may have sold Touré to Norwich City for less than he was worth.

“If he had played the whole autumn as he has started in Norwich, the price would probably have been different,” Sorensen told Danish outlet Bold.

“But that wasn’t the case, and that’s why we’re proud of the sale we ended up making.

“We are, of course, looking forward to both achieving various bonuses and the opportunity to realise the resale clause that exists. Because he has the potential to go really far.”
