Harassed by 4 fake cops, computer operator dies of heart attack

Surat: A 42-year-old computer operator with a private company in Dahod collapsed and died in Bharuch, allegedly after being chased and harassed by four men posing as policemen who reportedly attempted to extort money from him.The deceased, Urvish Modi, was riding his moped with his wife near Rahadpor Road when the accused, travelling on two-wheelers, intercepted them. According to the family, the men were wearing khaki trousers and claimed to be police personnel. They allegedly began questioning Modi over his damaged number plate and demanded money.Modi, who was a heart patient, requested them to let him go, saying he was unwell. Despite his pleas, the harassment allegedly continued. He soon collapsed on the road. Locals rushed him to a private hospital, but he died on the way.Bharuch A Division police registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation.Police inspector R M Vasava said CCTV footage from the route shows four men approaching and speaking to the couple. “We are identifying them and verifying whether they were authorized by any bank or agency. If the family’s allegations are substantiated, a formal offence will be registered,” he said.Modi’s wife, a school employee, alleged that the family had been harassed for the past three months by men posing as policemen and bank recovery agents. “We told them we have no pending loan. Then they started demanding money over the damaged number plate,” she said.Local residents claimed that imposters posing as police or recovery agents have been extorting money from motorists and subjecting them to mental harassment in the city.
