Man using VPNs to mask identity & make threat calls arrested from Noida Sector 18 | Noida News – The Times of India

Noida: The cyber crime branch has arrested a man for making death threat calls using virtual private network (VPN) numbers to conceal his identity. He was apprehended from Sector 18 following a tip-off, an officer said on Thursday.Police identified the accused as Rishant Jain, a resident of JP Wish Town in Sector 128. During questioning, Jain told police he worked at a jewellery shop in Sector 18. An Apple mobile phone was recovered from his possession.According to police, the accused used paid mobile applications such as call recorders and voice changers while making the calls. Investigators are also probing whether he was part of a gang or acting individually to spread panic.The officer said Jain deleted the applications after using them in an attempt to destroy evidence. The arrest came a day after 18 schools in Gautam Buddh Nagar district received hoax bomb threat emails during the ongoing board exams. Officials said senders of these emails use VPN technology to avoid showing up on investigators’ radar. The seized mobile phone has been sent for detailed forensic analysis. Police are now trying to determine when and for how long Jain has been using the applications and how many individuals he may have threatened so far.Further investigation is underway, and the officer said additional action will be taken based on the findings.
